Cryptographic infrastructure

the keys, certificates, algorithms, and protocols that protect data in transit and at rest.

Cryptographic infrastructure is the collection of keys, certificates, algorithms, protocols, and supporting systems that protect data in transit and at rest. It is the practical foundation behind TLS connections, encrypted storage, VPNs, code signing, and identity trust.

In cyber security, this infrastructure matters because strong encryption is only as reliable as the systems that issue, store, rotate, and revoke the credentials behind it. Weak key management, expired certificates, broken trust chains, or outdated algorithms can expose traffic, enable impersonation, or weaken compliance. Attackers often target this layer indirectly by stealing private keys, abusing trusted certificates, or waiting to decrypt captured data later. Defenders strengthen it by using modern algorithms, protecting keys in hardware or secure vaults, auditing certificate lifecycles, and planning migrations to post-quantum-safe designs without disrupting existing services.
