Crowdsourcing

gathering observations from many people to spot shared patterns.

Crowdsourcing is the practice of collecting observations, reports, or measurements from many people or systems to find shared patterns. In cyber security, it helps turn scattered clues into usable intelligence. Users reporting phishing emails, endpoint agents sending telemetry, or researchers comparing notes on a suspicious file can reveal a trend that one sample alone would miss.

This matters because many attacks look ordinary in isolation. A single alert may be noise, but many matching reports can confirm a campaign, expose a new scam, or show that malware is spreading. Defenders use crowdsourcing in incident reporting, threat-intelligence sharing, and bug bounty programs. Attackers can benefit too, by hiding in large volumes of legitimate activity or by flooding public channels with false reports. The key value is pattern recognition at scale.
