Credential Layer

The combined set of credentials, secrets, and access controls that connect users, services, and automated systems to resources.

The credential layer is the combined set of credentials, secrets, keys, tokens, and access controls that let users, services, and automated systems reach resources. It is not a single vault or directory; it is the practical trust fabric that authenticates identities and authorizes actions across cloud apps, APIs, CI/CD pipelines, and machine workflows.

It matters because attackers often target this layer to bypass perimeter defenses. A leaked API key in source code, a stolen session token, or an over-privileged service account can give direct access to data and infrastructure. Defenders reduce risk by inventorying secrets, scanning code and logs, rotating and revoking exposed credentials, enforcing least privilege, and monitoring non-human identities. In mature programs, detection is paired with remediation and prevention so the same secret does not reappear elsewhere.
