crates.io

The default package registry for Rust, where developers publish and fetch reusable libraries.

crates.io is the default package registry for Rust. Developers publish reusable libraries, called crates, to crates.io and other projects fetch them as dependencies. Because many applications pull in dozens or hundreds of crates, the registry is a critical part of the Rust software supply chain.

In cyber security, crates.io matters because attackers often target the trust around publishing, not just the code itself. If an attacker steals a maintainer account, tricks a developer into approving a release, or slips a malicious update into a popular crate, that code can spread quickly to downstream users. Defenders reduce this risk with strong account protection, phishing-resistant MFA, careful review of dependency changes, and trusted publishing workflows that limit secret reuse. In practice, crates.io is both a convenience layer and a high-value target: compromise the registry relationship, and you can influence the software many systems depend on.
