Counterfeit hardware

Fake or cloned devices and accessories that can pose safety or security risks.

Counterfeit hardware is a fake, cloned, or altered device that is sold as if it were genuine. It can include chargers, cables, batteries, adapters, storage devices, peripherals, or even entire appliances. These products may look authentic, but they often use lower-quality components, incorrect firmware, or hidden modifications.

In cybersecurity, counterfeit hardware matters because trust in a device starts at the physical layer. A fake accessory can damage equipment, leak data, or embed malicious features such as rogue USB controllers, covert radios, or tampered firmware. Attackers also use counterfeit parts to bypass supply-chain controls or to create cheap lookalikes that users plug into trusted systems. Defenses include buying from authorized sellers, checking serial numbers and packaging, verifying firmware and signatures where possible, and using asset inventories to spot unexpected devices. For organizations, vendor validation and controlled procurement are key to reducing risk.
