Copper oxide

a family of compounds made from copper and oxygen, some of which can show useful electrical behavior.

Copper oxide is a family of compounds made from copper and oxygen, including copper(I) oxide (Cu2O) and copper(II) oxide (CuO). Depending on the form and how it is made, it can behave as a semiconductor, which means it can conduct electricity in controlled ways rather than like a simple metal.

In cyber security, copper oxide matters because many hardware systems rely on physical materials to sense light, heat, or other environmental changes. A Cu2O layer may be used in a photodetector or other low-cost sensor, where its electrical response becomes part of a larger digital system. If the material is inconsistent, damaged, or poorly calibrated, an attacker may be able to confuse sensing logic, weaken a tamper check, or induce unreliable readings. Defenders also use material properties for hardware validation, anti-tamper design, and sensor testing, because trustworthy software still depends on trustworthy physical inputs.
