Contract variation

A formal change to a contract’s scope, timing, price, or terms.

A contract variation is a formal change to an existing agreement’s scope, timing, price, or terms. In public procurement, these changes are sometimes needed when requirements shift, delivery is delayed, or technical work proves more complex than expected. Good contract management keeps each variation documented so the original agreement and every later amendment can be compared clearly.

In cyber security, contract variations matter because digital procurement systems create opportunities for fraud, tampering, and unauthorized edits. Attackers may try to alter a purchase order, invoice, or change request to inflate costs or hide a false extension. Defenders reduce that risk with strong access control, approval workflows, versioning, audit logs, and digital signatures. A well-controlled variation record helps investigators verify who changed what, when, and why, which is essential for both transparency and incident response.
