Content validation is the process of checking a file’s real format and structure, not just its name, extension, or claimed MIME type. A file named image.jpg may still contain a different format, a malformed payload, or extra data that only becomes visible when the server parses it.
This matters because attackers often disguise malicious uploads to bypass weak filters, trigger parser bugs, or smuggle unexpected content into trusted systems. Strong validation examines magic bytes, file structure, and decoded output, then applies allowlists, size limits, and safe re-encoding when possible. In file-upload defenses, content validation helps prevent dangerous files from reaching storage, processors, or downstream services that assume the input is safe.
