Content authenticity

The quality of being verifiably genuine rather than synthetic, altered, or misleading.

Content authenticity is the ability to prove that digital text, images, audio, or video are genuine, unaltered, and traceable to a trusted source. In security work, authenticity is different from simple accuracy: a message can be true yet still be fake in origin, while a real file can be altered in ways that change its meaning. Authenticity depends on provenance, signatures, metadata, and audit trails that show where content came from and whether it was modified.

This matters because attackers use synthetic or edited content to scam users, forge approvals, spread disinformation, and impersonate executives with deepfakes or polished phishing emails. Defenders use the same concept in reverse: digital signatures, secure logging, content provenance standards, and human review help verify that a document or media file is what it claims to be. In AI-heavy environments, authenticity controls are essential because fluent machine-generated content can look credible even when it has no trustworthy origin.
