Contact degradation is the loss of a dependable electrical connection caused by wear, oxidation, corrosion, dirt, or residue. In practice, a switch, connector, battery terminal, or board edge may still look intact while the signal path becomes weak or intermittent. That makes the fault hard to diagnose because the device may work only when pressed, flexed, or cleaned.
In cyber security, contact degradation matters because unreliable hardware can mimic malware, hide tampering, or disrupt trusted equipment such as controllers, badges, sensors, and removable media. Attackers may exploit poor contacts to cause denial of service or force repeated reboots, while defenders use inspection, cleaning, and continuity testing to separate real logic failures from physical layer problems before reusing or trusting a device.
