Consumer protection

A legal framework focused on preventing unfair or harmful products and practices.

Consumer protection is the legal framework that aims to stop unfair, deceptive, or harmful products and business practices. In cybersecurity, it matters because digital systems can harm users even when no “hack” occurs: misleading claims, hidden data collection, weak privacy controls, unsafe defaults, or confusing product behavior can all create consumer risk.

Security teams and regulators use consumer-protection ideas to evaluate whether a product tells the truth about its capabilities, handles personal data responsibly, and includes safeguards when outputs fail. In real attacks, criminals often exploit consumer trust with fake support sites, scam apps, phishing messages, and deceptive AI tools. In defense, companies reduce risk by clearly disclosing limits, protecting user data, logging dangerous behavior, and designing interfaces that do not mislead users about what a system can do.
