A consumer account is a personal account for an online service, rather than an account managed by an employer or other organization. Enterprise administrators generally cannot automatically apply their organization’s membership, policy, or visibility controls to it.
In security, this matters when employees use personal accounts for work: sensitive data entered into a service may fall outside managed protections and monitoring. Defenders can use identity, endpoint, network, or data loss prevention controls to help identify or limit unsanctioned use, but seeing access to a service does not necessarily reveal the account used or the content submitted. Clear data-handling rules and a practical, approved managed workspace help reduce this risk.
