Connected device

Hardware that can communicate with other systems through a network or pairing link.

A connected device is hardware that can communicate with other systems through a network, wireless link, or pairing relationship. Examples include smart displays, cameras, wearables, and printers. The key security difference from stand-alone hardware is that connectivity creates a path for remote control, data exchange, and software updates.

In cyber security, connected devices matter because every link expands the attack surface. If a device has weak authentication, outdated firmware, or unnecessary online features, attackers may use it as an entry point, a spy device, or a foothold inside a trusted environment. Defenders reduce risk by disabling unused services, removing old accounts, updating firmware, changing default credentials, and reviewing whether the device still needs network access at all. When old hardware is reused, its connection settings should be treated as a fresh trust decision, not a leftover assumption.
