Connected car

A vehicle that exchanges data with external services, apps, or infrastructure.

A connected car is a vehicle that uses embedded software and network links to exchange data with mobile apps, cloud services, fleet platforms, charging networks, or roadside infrastructure. These connections enable remote unlocking, navigation, diagnostics, software updates, and safety features, but they also expand the attack surface.

In cyber security, connected cars matter because attackers can target the whole service chain, not just the vehicle. Weak APIs, stolen app credentials, insecure Bluetooth or cellular interfaces, and poorly protected over-the-air update systems can expose location data, account access, or vehicle functions. Defenders reduce risk with strong authentication, encryption, network segmentation, secure boot, signed updates, and monitoring for abnormal commands or telemetry. A connected car is safest when its convenience features are designed as security-sensitive systems from the start.
