Configuration state

The actual settings in use on a system, which can determine whether a vulnerability is reachable.

Configuration state is the set of active settings on a system: enabled services, exposed ports, permissions, feature flags, and other runtime choices. It describes what is actually in use, not just what software is installed or what version is present.

In cyber security, configuration state matters because it can decide whether a vulnerability is reachable. A flaw may exist in a product, but if the risky feature is disabled, bound to localhost, or isolated behind a privilege boundary, an attacker may not be able to trigger it. Defenders use configuration review to reduce attack surface, confirm patch impact, and spot exposed components that turn a theoretical issue into a live one. Attackers, in turn, look for misconfigurations such as public admin interfaces, weak default settings, or optional services that were left on. In practice, security teams should verify both the fixed version and the exact enabled features on each host.
