Component supply is the availability of the critical parts needed to build, repair, and scale a product. In cyber security, this can include hardware chips, radios, sensors, storage devices, embedded controllers, and even trusted software libraries. If a product cannot get the right components in time, development slows, repairs are delayed, and large-scale deployment becomes harder.
This matters because supply constraints can create security risk. When teams face shortages, they may substitute unverified parts, buy from gray markets, or accept firmware and hardware from less trusted sources. Attackers can exploit that pressure through counterfeit components, tampered devices, or compromised suppliers. Defenders reduce the risk by checking provenance, using approved vendors, validating firmware signatures, diversifying sources, and keeping inventory plans that support secure patching and maintenance.
