Compensation transparency is the practice of making pay structure clear, including salary bands, bonus criteria, promotion rules, and how raises are decided. In security-conscious organizations, this matters because unclear pay can create frustration, mistrust, and turnover. Those conditions do not directly cause cyber incidents, but they can weaken controls by making staff less likely to follow policy, report problems, or stay in sensitive roles.
In cyber security, transparency is a governance and insider-risk control. Clear compensation policies help reduce rumors, limit uneven bargaining power, and support retention of administrators, analysts, and developers who handle privileged access. Attackers can exploit pay secrecy too: leaked salary data may fuel spear phishing, impersonation, or social engineering against HR and finance teams. Defenders respond with documented pay bands, consistent approval workflows, and restricted access to payroll records so sensitive compensation data is not exposed unnecessarily.
