Compatibility flag

A label that indicates which hardware or system a product is intended for.

A compatibility flag is a metadata label that tells a system which hardware, operating system, or platform a product is meant for. In software stores, launchers, and deployment tools, it helps filter content so users only see builds that should run on their device. A correct flag reduces failed installs, support noise, and accidental exposure of the wrong package.

In cyber security, compatibility flags matter because they are part of the trust boundary around software distribution. If an attacker can alter them, a product may be shown to the wrong audience, hidden from review, or paired with an unexpected build. Defenders protect these fields with catalog validation, change approval, and integrity checks so platform labels match the signed artifact and intended target system.
