Compatibility break

A change that causes older clients, plugins, or integrations to stop working correctly.

A compatibility break is a change in software, protocols, or data formats that causes older clients, plugins, scripts, or integrations to stop working correctly. It often appears after a major version upgrade when APIs change, required fields are renamed, authentication flows shift, or internal data structures are migrated.

In cyber security, compatibility breaks matter because they can disable security tooling, break monitoring hooks, or force administrators to delay patches. Attackers may also exploit upgrade friction: if a critical fix arrives with breaking changes, defenders may postpone deployment and leave vulnerable systems exposed. In self-hosted environments, old plugins or clients may fail after an update, which can look like an outage but is really a version mismatch. Safe operators test upgrades in staging, check vendor notes, update dependencies first, and keep backups so they can recover if a change breaks the production path.
