Cold wallet

An offline wallet used for stronger storage isolation and reduced internet exposure.

A cold wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet kept offline or otherwise isolated from the internet. It is used for long-term storage of funds and for reducing exposure to remote compromise, phishing, malware, and unauthorized API access. Because the private keys are not continuously online, attackers have a much harder time stealing assets directly.

In cyber security, cold wallets matter as a containment control. Exchanges and custodians often keep most reserves in cold storage while using hot wallets for day-to-day withdrawals. If an attacker compromises an active system, the goal is to limit losses to the online wallet layer and keep offline reserves untouched. Cold wallets still require strong key management, physical security, and controlled signing procedures, because an offline design does not protect against insider misuse, poor operational controls, or theft during signing. In practice, cold storage is one of the main defenses that turns a wallet breach into a narrower incident instead of a total reserve loss.
