Coded identifier

A label that hides the real name of the victim.

A coded identifier is a label that masks the real name of a victim, organization, system, or asset. In ransomware and extortion settings, attackers may publish a victim entry using a hash-like tag, internal code, or status label instead of a plain company name. This keeps the target ambiguous while still signaling that a claim has been made.

In cyber security, coded identifiers matter because they complicate verification. Analysts, incident responders, and business teams may see a listing but cannot immediately confirm who is affected, whether the entry is authentic, or what the tag means. That uncertainty can slow response and create unnecessary alarm if the label is treated as proof. Defenders should correlate the coded name with internal logs, alerts, and external intelligence before drawing conclusions. In practice, these labels are often used in leak sites, extortion posts, and internal tooling to track victims without exposing identities.
