Code indexing

A system for cataloging source code so searches and AI tools can retrieve relevant context from large repositories.

Code indexing is the process of scanning a source code repository and building a searchable catalog of files, symbols, dependencies, comments, and other useful metadata. Instead of reading every file on demand, search tools and AI assistants can use the index to find relevant context quickly across very large codebases.

In cybersecurity, code indexing matters because it changes how sensitive code is discovered and exposed. A well-designed index supports secure developer workflows, faster reviews, and better detection of risky patterns such as hardcoded secrets or unsafe functions. But if indexing systems are over-permissioned or poorly isolated, they can reveal proprietary logic, credentials, or internal architecture to users and tools that should not see it. Defenders therefore pair indexing with least-privilege access, audit logging, and repository-scoped permissions. Attackers may also target indexed search interfaces to enumerate code, locate secrets, or map an organization’s software stack.
