Cloud staging

The use of cloud services as temporary infrastructure for hosting, redirecting, or delivering malicious content.

Cloud staging is the use of cloud services as temporary infrastructure to host, redirect, or deliver malicious content. Attackers may place files, links, scripts, or command-and-control components in a reputable cloud environment to make the activity look ordinary and harder to block.

This matters because cloud platforms often blend into normal business traffic and can inherit strong availability, trust, and reputation. In real attacks, cloud staging can support phishing pages, fake installers, payload downloads, or redirect chains that hide the final destination. It can also be used to swap infrastructure quickly after takedowns. For defenders, the challenge is not just the file itself but the full delivery path: unusual cloud URLs, one-time download links, and cloud-hosted lures should be inspected alongside endpoint and identity alerts. Monitoring cloud access logs, blocking risky downloads, and validating binaries before execution help reduce the value of this tactic.
