Cloud modernization is the process of updating applications, data flows, and infrastructure so they run more effectively in cloud environments. This can include rehosting legacy systems, refactoring code for cloud-native services, replacing old components, and redesigning deployment and recovery workflows. The goal is usually better scalability, resilience, automation, and easier maintenance.
In cyber security, cloud modernization matters because it changes the attack surface. Moving services, identities, secrets, and data pipelines into the cloud can introduce misconfigurations, weak access controls, exposed storage, or broken dependencies. Attackers often exploit rushed migrations, while defenders use modernization to improve logging, segmentation, patching, and rollback planning. Good modernization work treats AI-generated plans, migration scripts, and test cases as untrusted until reviewed, because a single error can affect authentication, production data, or cutover safety.
