A cloud directory service is a directory platform delivered from the cloud that centralizes identity records, authentication, and access control. It often becomes the authoritative place for user accounts, groups, device records, and application assignments, replacing or extending on-premises Active Directory. In practice, it can also act as the source of truth for provisioning, offboarding, and single sign-on.
In cyber security, this matters because the directory sits at the center of who can access what. If attackers steal administrator credentials or abuse weak conditional access rules, they may gain broad access, create persistence, or modify accounts and groups to expand privileges. Defenders use cloud directory services to enforce MFA, automate provisioning, review access, and detect risky changes. A well-designed directory reduces fragmentation; a poorly designed one can leave identity, HR, and device control out of sync, making unauthorized access harder to spot.
