Clinical database

A structured collection of health-related records used for analysis or operations.

A clinical database is a structured repository of health-related records used for care, billing, research, analytics, or operational workflows. It may contain diagnoses, lab results, medications, visit histories, imaging references, and other sensitive patient data. Because the records are highly personal, these systems are tightly regulated and attractive targets for attackers.

In cyber security, clinical databases matter because a compromise can expose confidential health information, disrupt hospital operations, or enable extortion through ransomware. They also create privacy risk even when identifiers are removed, since combinations of fields can sometimes allow re-identification. Defenders protect these systems with strong access control, encryption, logging, segmentation, backup testing, and data minimization. Attackers, by contrast, may exploit weak credentials, application flaws, or overbroad permissions to copy, alter, or leak records. In practice, the security of a clinical database depends on both technical controls and careful handling of the data inside it.
