Citrix NetScaler is an application delivery and access platform often deployed at the network edge. In practice, it acts as a front door for remote users and internal applications, combining traffic management, load balancing, authentication, and gateway functions such as VPN and proxy access. Because it sits between the internet and private services, it is both highly trusted and highly exposed.
That placement makes NetScaler valuable to attackers and defenders alike. A flaw in the appliance can disrupt remote access, expose authentication paths, or cause denial of service for many users at once. Security teams therefore treat NetScaler as a critical perimeter asset: they track exact versions and configurations, apply vendor fixes quickly, monitor gateway and AAA roles, and limit exposure wherever possible. In real attacks, compromised edge appliances are often attractive because they concentrate access in one place; in defense, they are prioritized because a single patch can protect many downstream systems.
