CIP Security is Rockwell Automation’s security extension for Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) communications, commonly used in industrial networks such as EtherNet/IP. It adds authentication and protection to controller, I/O, and engineering traffic so devices can verify who is talking to them and detect tampering in transit. In practice, it helps reduce risks such as spoofed commands, modified data, and replay of control messages.
In cyber security, CIP Security matters because industrial communications often move between PLCs, HMIs, and supervisory systems that directly affect physical processes. If an attacker can reach those channels, they may try to impersonate a trusted device or manipulate control traffic. When properly deployed, CIP Security raises that bar by protecting supported communications, but it is most effective when paired with segmentation, strict remote access, and strong asset management. It is a defense layer, not a substitute for secure network design.
