The CI/CD control plane is the management layer that coordinates a software delivery pipeline. It schedules builds, runs tests, manages credentials, signs artifacts, and tells deployment jobs what to do. In practice, it is the command center for continuous integration and continuous delivery systems, not just another application server.
It matters in cyber security because this layer often holds privileged access to source code, build secrets, release tooling, and production pathways. If an attacker gains control of it, they may alter builds, steal secrets, inject malicious code, or manipulate deployments. Defenders treat the control plane as high-value infrastructure: restrict network exposure, use least-privilege service accounts, patch quickly, and monitor for unusual administrative activity. Pre-authentication flaws in CI/CD platforms are especially dangerous because they can reach this trusted layer before normal login controls apply.
