chrome.proxy.settings

A Chrome setting that lets an extension change how browser traffic is routed.

chrome.proxy.settings is a Chrome extension API that lets an extension change the browser’s proxy configuration. In practice, it can redirect web traffic through a chosen proxy server, define proxy rules for different destinations, or fall back to direct connections for exceptions. Because the change happens inside the browser, the extension can affect how requests leave the device without installing a full VPN client.

This matters because proxy control can become a surveillance or interception point. A malicious or deceptive extension can route most browsing through attacker-controlled infrastructure, exposing visited domains, source IP addresses, and unencrypted request data. Defenders treat this permission as high risk: review which extensions can manage network settings, restrict installation to trusted sources, and monitor for unexpected proxy changes. In real attacks, abuse of chrome.proxy.settings often appears in fake VPN, privacy, or “security” add-ons that present a legitimate interface while silently rerouting traffic.
