Chip fabrication

The manufacturing of integrated circuits on silicon wafers using specialized equipment and processes.

Chip fabrication is the process of manufacturing integrated circuits on silicon wafers using highly specialized tools, materials, and cleanroom processes. It turns semiconductor designs into physical chips through steps such as lithography, etching, deposition, and inspection. Because it requires expensive facilities and rare expertise, fabrication is concentrated in a small number of factories and regions.

In cyber security, chip fabrication matters because many attacks and defenses depend on the integrity and availability of hardware. A disruption in fabrication can delay secure devices, trusted components, and replacement parts for critical systems. Attackers may also target the supply chain upstream, hoping to introduce counterfeit or altered chips before assembly. Defenders respond by mapping suppliers, validating provenance, testing hardware, and diversifying sources where possible. In practice, fabrication is a chokepoint: if the wafers cannot be made, the rest of the hardware stack cannot be trusted or deployed.
