Certification scope

The exact product, module, or environment covered by a security validation or approval.

Certification scope is the exact product, component, version, module, or operating environment that a security validation or approval actually covers. A certificate or approval does not usually apply to an entire company or every deployment by default; it applies only to the specific items tested against a defined standard, configuration, and assumptions.

This matters because attackers and defenders often rely on labels like “certified” or “approved” without checking the boundary. A device may be certified only for one firmware build, one hardware revision, or one lab configuration, while production use includes extra features, integrations, or cloud services outside the scope. In practice, defenders use scope to verify whether a control is truly covered, and auditors use it to prevent overclaiming. In cyber incidents, weak scope reading can hide risk: a product may be compliant on paper yet still expose unsafe modules in real deployments. Good security review always asks, “What exactly was certified?”
