Centralized service

A remote platform that controls access, storage, or authentication for many users at once.

A centralized service is a remote platform that many users depend on for access, storage, or authentication. Instead of each user or device operating independently, the service becomes the control point for logins, file access, syncing, permissions, or other core functions. In security terms, that makes it efficient, but also creates concentration risk.

Centralization matters because one outage, policy change, or compromise can affect every connected user at once. Attackers may target centralized services with credential theft, account takeover, or denial-of-service attacks because success scales quickly. Defenders use the same architecture for control and monitoring, but they should plan for failures with backup access, export options, redundancy, and migration paths. When a centralized service is retired without those safeguards, users can lose access to data that still exists but is no longer reachable.
