Cellular backup

A backup communication path that uses mobile networks when primary connectivity is unavailable.

Cellular backup is a secondary communication path that uses a mobile network when the primary link, such as broadband or fiber, is unavailable. In security systems, it lets alarm panels, monitoring devices, and remote sensors continue sending alerts during outages, cable cuts, or local network failures.

It matters because availability is part of security. If the main connection fails, a cellular failover path can keep alarms, telemetry, and status reports flowing so defenders still see events in real time. In attacks and incidents, cellular backup can reduce downtime, but it also creates its own risks: weak SIM management, exposed modems, poor signal coverage, and unmonitored backup links can become gaps in defense. Good practice includes testing failover, limiting which devices can use the mobile path, and monitoring the backup channel with the same care as the primary network.
