Capability roadmap

A living plan for how a business function will improve over time after implementation.

A capability roadmap is a living plan for how a business function will mature over time after a system, process, or control has been put in place. In cyber security, it maps the next steps for a capability such as identity management, logging, incident response, or vulnerability management, showing what will be improved, by whom, and in what order.

It matters because security does not end at deployment. Attackers often take advantage of the gap between launch and steady-state operations, when ownership is unclear and teams fall back to workarounds. A good roadmap prevents that drift by turning security into continuous product work: it can schedule MFA expansion, SIEM tuning, backup testing, privilege reviews, or response-runbook updates. Defenders use capability roadmaps to prioritize fixes, measure progress, and keep controls aligned with changing risks and business needs.
