Canone is a recurring fixed fee paid to use a service, platform, or device. In cybersecurity, it often appears as a subscription or maintenance charge for tools such as endpoint protection, firewalls, backup services, managed monitoring, or cloud-based security consoles. Unlike a one-time purchase, the canone covers continued access over time.
This matters because many defenses depend on an active subscription: threat signatures, software updates, support, device management, and logging can stop or degrade when payment lapses. Attackers can benefit from that gap if an expired license leaves a system unpatched or unmonitored. Defenders, in turn, track renewals carefully so critical protections stay enabled and do not fail silently. In practice, the canone is part of security operations, not just accounting: it helps determine whether a control remains effective after installation.
