Caller verification

Checking a caller’s identity through an independent trusted channel.

Caller verification is the practice of confirming a caller’s identity through an independent, trusted channel instead of trusting the number, voice, or story presented in the call. A common method is to hang up and call back using a known official number, internal directory, or secure messaging path.

It matters because attackers often use phone calls for social engineering, including impersonation of police, banks, IT staff, or delivery services. The call may sound urgent and credible, but the real goal is to make the target reveal information, approve a payment, or take another unsafe action. Verification breaks that pressure cycle. In defense, organizations teach staff to verify identity before sharing data, approving requests, or changing account settings. Good caller verification is simple, repeatable, and based on an external source of truth, not the caller’s claim.
