CAD drawings are computer-aided design files used to create and document products, parts, buildings, and industrial systems. They often include dimensions, tolerances, materials, and assembly details, making them far more valuable than ordinary documents in engineering and manufacturing environments.
In cyber security, CAD drawings are sensitive because they can expose intellectual property, reveal how critical infrastructure is built, or give attackers a shortcut to counterfeit, sabotage, or competitive theft. Ransomware and data-extortion groups may steal or threaten to leak CAD files to increase pressure, especially when the files relate to ongoing projects or proprietary designs. Defenders protect these files with strong access control, encryption, logging, backups, and file-monitoring rules that flag unusual downloads or bulk access from shared repositories.
