Cache miss

A request that cannot reuse prior context and must be processed from scratch.

A cache miss happens when a system cannot find a reusable result, context, or data item in cache and must recompute the response from the original input. In AI APIs, that often means the model has to process the full prompt and conversation again instead of reusing a stored prefix or prior state. This costs more time and money than a cache hit, and it increases load on the service.

In cyber security, cache misses matter because they can be forced or amplified. Attackers may vary prompts, inject changing tokens, or trigger agent loops so requests miss the cache repeatedly, driving up spend and creating denial-of-wallet conditions. Defenders watch cache-hit ratios, normalize repeated requests, cap retries, and separate stable batch jobs from highly dynamic workflows. Good cache design reduces cost, limits unnecessary computation, and makes large-scale AI systems more resilient.
