A business intelligence (BI) platform is software used to connect to organizational data sources, run queries, build dashboards, and generate reports. It sits between raw databases and the people who need to understand the data, turning records into charts, summaries, and operational metrics. Common examples include self-hosted analytics tools that connect to production databases or warehouses.
In cybersecurity, BI platforms matter because they often have broad read access and sometimes privileged access to multiple systems. If an attacker compromises the platform, they may learn how data is organized, view sensitive reports, or reach connected database credentials and internal query paths. Defenders should treat BI systems as high-value infrastructure: patch them quickly, restrict network exposure, apply least privilege to service accounts, and monitor for unusual logins, admin changes, and query activity. A weak reporting layer can become an entry point into much larger data exposure.
