Browser history API

A browser interface that allows extensions to read a user's history when granted the proper permission.

The browser history API is an interface that lets a browser extension read entries from a user’s browsing history, but only when the extension has the required permission. That history can include visited URLs, titles, and timestamps, which makes it a sensitive data source rather than a simple convenience feature. In practice, the API is used for navigation helpers, session recovery, and productivity tools, but it also exposes a detailed record of where a user has been online.

In cyber security, this matters because history can reveal internal services, login portals, research topics, and other clues useful for reconnaissance, targeting, or follow-on phishing. A malicious extension can abuse the API to profile a victim, map corporate activity, or identify high-value sites. Defenders should treat history access as privileged, review extension permissions carefully, and limit which add-ons are allowed in managed environments. Least-privilege permissions and user scrutiny are the main defenses against abuse.
