Bridge subsystem

The Linux kernel component that implements software bridging for Ethernet networks.

The bridge subsystem is the Linux kernel component that provides software Ethernet bridging. It lets a system forward frames between network interfaces as if they were on the same Layer 2 switch, making it useful for virtual machines, containers, and routed or segmented networks.

In security terms, the bridge subsystem matters because it sits in a privileged part of the kernel and often handles deferred work such as timers, state changes, and protocol housekeeping. Bugs in this area can become memory-safety issues, including use-after-free conditions, when an object is torn down but later referenced by asynchronous code. Defenders watch bridge code closely because flaws can affect systems that rely on Linux bridging and Spanning Tree Protocol, and exploitation in kernel space can have serious impact.
