Breach detection

Monitoring that helps identify whether personal data appears in leak datasets.

Breach detection is monitoring that checks whether personal data, such as email addresses, passwords, or phone numbers, appears in known leak datasets. Security tools compare user-supplied identifiers against collections of exposed records from previous data breaches and alert when a match is found.

This matters because exposed credentials are often reused in account takeover, phishing, and credential-stuffing attacks. A breach alert does not mean an account is currently compromised, but it is a strong signal that the affected password should be changed, reused passwords retired, and multifactor authentication enabled. In defense tools, breach detection is most useful when it is paired with password managers, identity monitoring, and fast response workflows, so users can act before stolen data is exploited.
