Brainstem

the lower part of the brain that helps control essential functions.

The brainstem is the lower part of the brain that controls essential automatic functions such as breathing, heart rate, and basic alertness. It is small, but it sits on the critical path for life-sustaining processes, which makes its structure and function a major focus in neuroscience.

In cyber security, brainstem is sometimes used as a metaphor for the most essential control layer in a system: the kernel, firmware, identity service, or other core component that everything else depends on. If an attacker compromises that core, they can often bypass higher-level defenses, persist across reboots, or disable recovery options. Defenders protect this “brainstem” with secure boot, tight access control, patching, segmentation, and monitoring for tampering.
