Boundary enforcement

The act of checking rules at the point where one system trusts another, such as payment authorization or network access.

Boundary enforcement is the practice of checking security rules exactly where one system begins to trust another. That boundary may be a payment authorization step, an API gateway, a login session, a firewall rule, or a device connecting to a network. The goal is to verify identity, state, policy, and limits before access is granted or an action is allowed.

This matters because many attacks succeed by reaching the edge and exploiting weak checks there: expired credentials that are still accepted, requests that bypass authorization, or services that keep talking when they should be isolated. Strong boundary enforcement is a core defense in payment security, zero-trust network design, and incident containment. In practice, it means enforcing expiration, validating every request, logging decisions, and making sure blocked traffic stays blocked even under load or during an attack.
