Black box model

A system whose internal reasoning is difficult to inspect or translate into human terms.

A black box model is a system whose internal reasoning is hard to inspect or translate into human terms. In machine learning, this usually means the model may produce accurate outputs, but the steps between input and output are too complex, opaque, or proprietary for a clear explanation.

In cybersecurity, black box models are common in malware detection, fraud scoring, spam filtering, and threat prioritization. They can be powerful, but they also create risk: defenders may not know why a file was blocked, why traffic was flagged, or when the model is likely to fail. That makes auditing, incident review, and compliance harder. Attackers can also probe black box defenses by sending many test inputs and learning how the system reacts, a technique similar to black-box testing. Because of this, security teams often pair black box models with logging, human review, and explainability tools to make decisions more trustworthy.
