Biometric surveillance

Automated monitoring or identification based on physical or behavioral traits such as face, voice, or gait.

Biometric surveillance is automated monitoring or identification using physical or behavioral traits such as face, voice, iris, fingerprint, or gait. Unlike a password, these traits are hard to change, so the data can become a long-term security and privacy risk if collected, stored, or shared without strong controls.

In cyber security, biometric systems matter because they can be attacked like any other identity platform. Threats include spoofing with photos, masks, replayed audio, deepfakes, sensor tampering, database theft, and model evasion. Defenders reduce risk with liveness checks, encryption, access control, audit logs, minimization of stored templates, and human review for high-impact decisions. Used carefully, biometrics can improve authentication; used poorly, they can enable mass tracking, false matches, and abuse of sensitive identity data.
