Biometric recognition

Automated identification or verification using physical traits such as facial features.

Biometric recognition is automated identification or verification using physical or behavioral traits, such as facial features, fingerprints, iris patterns, or voice. A system compares a live sample with stored templates to answer a simple security question: Is this person who they claim to be?

In cyber security, biometric systems matter because they can speed up access control and support investigations, but they also create privacy, reliability, and abuse risks. Attackers may try to spoof cameras with photos, masks, or deepfakes, or steal biometric templates to reuse them. Defenders reduce that risk with liveness detection, multi-factor authentication, careful logging, strict authorization, and limits on where the system can be used. In high-risk settings such as law enforcement, biometric recognition is often treated as a controlled capability rather than a default tool because false positives and poor oversight can turn a security feature into an operational liability.
