A beta build is a pre-release software version used to test new features, fixes, and interface changes before public release. It is usually more stable than an alpha build, but it can still contain bugs, incomplete controls, and shifting behavior. Because of that, the exact feature set and security properties may change before rollout.
In cyber security, beta builds matter because they often expose new attack surfaces and new defenses at the same time. Security teams may test account controls, access restrictions, logging, or device-bound protections in beta to see whether they reduce abuse without breaking usability. Attackers also watch beta features for weaknesses such as bypasses, unsafe defaults, or data leakage across devices. In practice, a beta build should be treated as preview software: useful for evaluation, but not proof that a control is final, comprehensive, or safe enough to trust on its own.
