Behavioral indicators

Observable patterns that may suggest unusual or risky user activity.

Behavioral indicators are observable patterns in how a user acts across systems, accounts, and workflows. They can include unusual login times, rapid privilege changes, large file transfers, repeated access to sensitive data, or sudden use of new devices and locations. By themselves, these signals do not prove wrongdoing; they are clues that activity may be out of line with normal behavior.

In cyber security, behavioral indicators matter because attackers often reuse legitimate credentials and try to blend in. Defenders use them in user and entity behavior analytics, insider-threat programs, and fraud detection to spot compromised accounts, misuse of access, or risky insider activity early. Good monitoring compares behavior to a baseline, then combines indicators with context such as role, device, and policy to reduce false alarms.
